The ability of being able to do something, which you at one point thought was impossible or difficult to do, is Fitness. It transcends beyond your physical capabilities, nourishing your mind and fortifying your soul. Simply put, the pursuit of fitness makes you better than you were yesterday – physically, mentally and spiritually. It’s a journey, which pushes you beyond your perceived limitations and boundaries, and converts the un-achievable into something achievable.
Fitness does not discriminate. No matter what your gender, your race, your age, your color, your nationality, your profession, your body type is, even if you are afflicted with a disease, fitness is all encompassing, all accepting, and never judges for who or what you are. What matters to it, is what you are now willing to do, and then do it. It will reward you in ways you never thought, was possible.
It is not a trend, it is not a fad, it’s not temporary. Fitness yields its best results when it’s an integral part of your lifestyle. Modern day living is all about comfort, speed and ease and it has taken its toll on our health and fitness levels. Lethargy, lack of stamina, strength, energy, sleep and poor eating habits leading to diseases, illnesses and stress, are issues that plague most of us. Never more in the history of mankind, fitness has been more relevant as it is, in today’s day and age. Physical fitness is not just key to a healthy body, but also is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity. It’s only in a fit body, that a fit mind can reside.
Around 400 B.C, Hippocrates wrote:
Eating alone will not keep a man well: he must also exercise. For food and exercise while possessing opposite qualities, yet work together to produce health…..and it is necessary, as it appears, to discern the power of various exercises, both natural exercises and artificial, to know which of them tends to increase flesh and which to lessen; and not only this, but also to proportion exercise to bulk of food, to the constitution of the patient, to the age of the individual…
Fitness holds different meanings for every individual. Every individual has the freedom and the flexibility, to define fitness for themselves and set their own goals. For some, it could be as simple as having the energy at the end of a long day to be able to play with their child. For some, it could be to have a bikini body, for some it could be to run the full marathon, for some it could be to be able to walk 15 mins extra, for some it could be to fit into the pair of jeans they no longer are able to, for some it could be to build their bodies for a championship. It can be ANYTHING, and is entirely up to the individual.
Though fitness helps you achieve your goal, fitness on its own, is NOT a goal. You can always do MORE, and BETTER, and DIFFERENT. It is a journey. It is a constant pursuit with no end as such. It begins if you want, it ends if you want. It continues and grows if you want, making you a stronger person, a better human being, The only expectation it has is that you be consistent and along with your physical exercise, you nurture your body with proper nourishment, get adequate sleep and maintain a positive disposition.
There are 24 hours in a day, which for the most part, are meant for all but you – be it your families, your jobs, your friends. You owe time to yourself first and foremost, and without being apologetic about it. You need to be fit and healthy before you can be in a position to contribute meaningfully and positively to your family, your job or to your community. The best part and sadly also, the most ignored part is to realize how simple it actually is. Out of the 24 hours, about 30 mins is all it takes. That’s equivalent to an episode of your favorite series (or half of it) which you probably record, and watch later on.
There is no time like the present to start your relationship with fitness.
